Chapter 25

Proverbs 25 (Is)

"Do you like honey? Don't eat too much of it, or it will make you sick!" Proverbs 25:16 (NLT)

Duh. Right? Ohh I see. Maybe there is meaning within meaning?

Yes, too much honey will make you sick. But let's lay out the obvious first. Honey is tasty. We may have pure cane sugar now, but a thousand years ago honey was one of few natural sweeteners. If you put a child unwatched in a room full of chocolate chip cookies for a few hours he'll probably be sick later. Sometimes even good stuff can be bad for us in quantity.

Adults generally have experienced the pain of being sick from eating, but what about other types of sickness? What about too many video games, cars , too much time spent with one friend, or too much work? A sign of maturity is when someone knows their own self enough to limit the intake of just about everything. I'd like to think that I've grown enough to recognize some of the places where I can stuff myself until I'm sick... I said "some". We try to get what we can "while the gettin's good" because there is no way to know when the other shoe is going to drop. What kind of trust in God does that display? Yeah, save. Yeah, be wise and plan ahead... but beyond a certain point or reason we only work and strive for ashes in a future that only our God knows. So we've gotta learn to trust Him for the future and enjoy what we have now, without "over" enjoying and becoming obsessed by the pleasure of what surrounds us.

Ever notice how that treat item ceases to please like it used to?

Don't be like an undisciplined kid in a candy bin. Lay it aside and see what else God has in store for you. And don't touch my bonbon.

thanks.
