Chapter 7

Proverbs 7 (Linda)

What a way to speak of being drawn away from God!

David was Solomon’s father. David was also a man after God’s own heart. Solomon listened to the words of his father and thereby received from his father’s God, also.

David believed God and trusted Him in all things. In 1 Samuel 17:37, David tells Saul how the Lord killed the lion and bear that came after his sheep. Then in 1 Samuel 17:45-47 He tells Goliath that he comes in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, and that God does not save with sword or spear, but that the battle is the Lord’s. Isn’t it strange that David understood that God was with him and that the Lord was the one doing the saving? Could it be that even in his youth David had such a relationship with God that he understood more about God’s grace and presence than anyone before the death of Christ? Have you noticed that David’s heart never changed toward God? Is it any wonder that Solomon asked for wisdom when he could have received any gift from the Lord? Wisdom leads us to life, a life of peace and trust. Israel’s longest time of peace and safety were during Solomon’s time of reign. (1 Chronicles 22:9)

Proverbs 7 speaks of falling into a trap set by those who want to destroy us. They want to turn us away from the right and straight path by sweet words, craftiness, and lust. Enticed by our own desires for pleasure and simple minds thinking we will have everything we desire. That this road leads to our death and destruction is never considered, nor are the words our father spoke to us, about being wise and following his directions.

The lady spoken of here is one that our eyes lust after, which could be anything that we see and want for ourselves. She is not someone hard to look at, nor who turns away from us. She wants us to lie with her not realizing she is our coffin and leads to the grave.

In the first verses of chapter 7 we find the words of wisdom given as our father’s instructions. We are to store up his words and keep them at our fingertips and in our heart, because keeping his instructions brings us wisdom, peace and life.
