Proverbs 27 (Kent)
"As iron sharpens iron,
This verse speaks of the benefit of interaction with friends; personal growth or maturity. The more mature and the greater the integrity of our friends the greater the benefit to ourselves. Unfortunately the converse also is true; "Evil company corrupts good habits." 1 Corinthians 15:33
Verses 6 and 9 identify two specific benefits of friends.
"Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
Here we see that correction given in love by a friend can be trusted, he has your best interest at heart, but even the kiss of an enemy cannot be trusted. Prayer for discernment is sometimes in order.
"Ointment and perfume delight the heart,
Here the counsel of a friend is described as sweet and compared to ointment or perfume. There are many other verses dealing with friends...."But there is a Friend who sticks closer than a brother." Proverbs 18:24
Jesus Christ who will never let us down.
