Chapter 1

Proverbs 1 (Susan)

1 - 6 THE PROVERBS of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: That people may know skillful and godly Wisdom and instruction, discern and comprehend the words of understanding and insight, Receive instruction in wise dealing and the discipline of wise thoughtfulness, righteousness, justice, and integrity, That prudence may be given to the simple, and knowledge, discretion, and discernment to the youth-- The wise also will hear and increase in learning, and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel [so that he may be able to steer his course rightly]-- 6 That people may understand a proverb and a figure of speech or an enigma with its interpretation, and the words of the wise and their dark sayings or riddles.

I chose these verses because they mention wise teaching, riddles, discernment, insight, wise dealings, figures of speech and the person of understanding will acquire skill and attain to sound counsel if they look for and desire these things. These could also include the wise parables which Jesus taught. And even today we cannot hope to receive the full meaning of such deep and wise teachings without the Holy Spirit. He will reveal something to us today and next month that same passage will mean something totally different.

In Luke 8:10 it says, "The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, " 'though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.

But the proverbs of Solomon, the parables of Jesus, and the wisdom of the Bible altogether, have been given to us the sons and daughters of God. God has given us, His children, so much wisdom packed into one book. All we need to do is ask of Him.

Job 11:7 says, "Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty?

Daniel 2:28…but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries… and the revealer of mysteries showed you what is going to happen…

1 Peter 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

Not only does the world wonder about the mysteries of God, even the angels long to look into these things. As we grow and ask more of God He will give us the wisdom for our lives and the answers to the mysteries of Him Who was and is and is to come, that there may be life abundantly lived carefully through the Lord Jesus Christ. Solomon asked for wisdom to rule the people and God gave him so much more that we may benefit in every area of our lives.
