"Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding." Proverbs 23:23 NIV
What is truth?
As defined by an old Webster Dictionary Truth is:
- A being true; specif.,a) sincerity; honesty. b) conformity with fact. c) reality; actual existence. d) agreement with a standard, etc.; correctness. 2. that which is true. 3. an established fact; etc. ----in truth, truly; in fact.
Newer versions of the Webster Dictionary say:
2. Truth n, pl. truths - The facts corresponding with actual events or happenings; sincerity or honesty. Truthful adj., truthfully adv., truthfulness n.
"To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NIV
“I tell you the truth,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” John 8:58
"But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come." John 16:13
"You are a king, then!” said Pilate. Jesus answered, “Your are right in saying I am a king. In fact, for this reason I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone on the side of truth listens to me.” “What is truth?” Pilate asked." John 18:37-38a
Pilate had Truth standing before him, yet asked, “What is truth?” Do you know the Truth? What truth do you hold in your heart? Pilate knew Jesus was an innocent man but gave into public opinion. He heard and saw the Truth but gave into fear. Now, we know Jesus was innocent and was the sacrifice for our sins, so His Truth could dwell within us. Wisdom, discipline and understanding, come from knowing the Truth, which sets us free from sin, so we can truly know the Father.
Again, I ask, “What truth do you hold in your heart?”
Have you believed the Truth? Then sell it not!
