Proverbs 11 (Ted)
So much wisdom is packed into each chapter of Proverbs that it sometimes seems overwhelming. As I read through the nuggets of truth that Solomon has left us, occasionally a verse will sum up the chapter. In this chapter, verse 27 seems like such a verse: "He who seeks good finds goodwill, but evil comes to him who searches for it."
Many of the verses of this chapter point out how the behavior of the good and righteous makes their path through life easier. Indeed, our reputations can save us from much trouble. But woe to the evildoer and the fool...
As I was pondering Godly living (and how to do it!) earlier this week, it struck me that Jewish youth often knew the whole of the Old Testament by the age of 11. And we're talking complete memorization here -- pick a verse and they knew it! That made me wonder what it took to accomplish such a thorough knowledge... Surely it required persistence, dedication, and probably accountability too! But it also struck me what effect such knowledge would have on their lives -- a ready defense for anything life could throw at them. The response would be almost automatic, a good habit born from hard work.
While each verse could be its own Bible study, the theme I've taken from this chapter is that it pays to pursue good character and wisdom -- each will serve to earn you rewards in this life and the life to come.
This pursuit alone may save you from some of life's pitfalls.
And I've also redoubled my efforts to knowing God's Word in and out so that it changes me at every level.
It will be an exciting journey, and I welcome you to join me...
